Liefst 160000 mensen wereldwijd schreven zich in voor de online cursus. Dat was buiten alle verwachtingen van de 2 professoren Sebastian Thrun en Peter Norvig.

Heel opmerkelijk was de ontwikkeling bij de eigen Stanfordstudenten. Na een 2-tal weken kwam een groot deel van de 200 studenten niet meer opdagen voor de les. Ze verkozen om de cursus ook online te volgen!

De ervaringen met dit initiatief heeft ervoor gezorgd dat Thrun Stanford verlaten heeft: “Having done this, I can’t teach at Stanford again.” en verder “I’ve seen wonderland. We’ve  changed the world with education. If we can make education free for the world, accessible everywhere, I think we can help people in the developing world, in Africa, in India, China, to become much better, much stronger”.

De getuigenissen van deelnemers aan de AI-cursus hebben zijn visie op onderwijs fundamenteel gewijzigd. Onze universiteiten richten zich op falen (“grades are the failure of education”), terwijl het de bedoeling moet zijn om zoveel mogelijk mensen te doen slagen. Hen alle mogelijkheden en tools bieden om te slagen. Wat overigens totaal niet inhoudt dat het niveau van prestatie verlaagd wordt!

De lezing waarin Thrun terugblikte op de open cursus en waaruit bovenstaande citaten komen kan je hier bekijken. Een absolute aanrader! Tevens kondigde hij een nieuw initiatief aan, UDACITY:

We believe university-level education can be both high quality and low cost. Using the economics of the Internet, we’ve connected some of the greatest teachers to hundreds of thousands of students in almost every country on Earth. Know Labs was founded by three roboticists who believed much of the educational value of their university classes could be offered online for very low cost. A few weeks later, over 160,000 students in more than 190 countries enrolled in our first class, “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence.” The class was twice profiled by the New York Times and also by other news media. Now we’re a growing team of educators and engineers, on a mission to change the future of education.

Bedoeling is om verder te gaan met het format van de AI-cursus en dus ook andere cursussen van gerenomeerde professoren online aan te bieden, maar nu vanuit een privé-initiatief en niet meer vanuit Stanford. Wat mij wel onduidelijk is, is waar dan de fondsen vandaan komen om dit te kunnen realiseren….

This title went first through my mind when I did some talking with students who are mostly learning home after working-hours.
The part online-learning in Blended Learning is frequently considered as an online-delivery of study material. The teacher translates his contact hours in selfstudy, delivery of digital presentations, digital assignments,online-tests.
In an educational environment where management gives time and space to their teachers for coaching, students and teachers have also the possibility to participate on discussionboards, blogs, wikis, skype sessions, webconferences…

Content management systems are too much content-centered

Nowadays teachers make use of learning-platforms such as Blackboard. These platforms are developed as educational CMS’s whereby content is central. Most of these platforms integrate the above mentioned coaching facilities, but as a part of the content. All starts with a subject, presentations on that subject, discussion concerning the study-material, tests …
In the article on http://net.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/ERB0407.pdf (2004) Dzuiban ed. write:” a shift is going on from lecture- to student-centered instruction”. Have CMS-systems responded to this shift? Can these systems still be used for Blended Learning where students are at least 30% dependent on these platforms (Allen ed, Sloan Consortium ,2007)?
Despite the integration of communication tools in a CMS such as Blackboard, students are complaining about the lack of communication. Why is that? Because teachers are still to lecture-centered? Or because the CMS is to content-centered?
I asked some of our “long-distance students” how they feel about their study. Some of them students feel one or another way abandoned.They refuse to use a tool as Facebook, which they consider as non-suitable for education. At the same time they expect the same excellent usability of Facebook when using educational tools offered by the institution. They considered peer contacts as important as contacts with their teachers. Edmodo, the closed-community- facebook- application, was tested for a while, but didn’t succeed. Probably because of “to much technology” (mail, Blackboard, Edmodo,…) for one purpose : communication.


Bringing distance learners and teachers together: a communication management system.

During a session of Online Educa Berlin 2011 Miss KALALAHTI of the Finnisch University of Tampere presented her research-project on Blended Learning. She asked her students to make a list of wishes to succeed in the online part of Blended Learning. Their wishes:
• Communication (audio & video) must be considered as the most important feature
• Simple and easy to use
• Good realtime connection
• Discussionboard with attachments
• Mobile
They tested different platforms and after a one year trial period students were most satisfied about Yammer, a platform based on communication.
This platform is communication-centered (CMS = Communication Management System?). Like in Facebook, messages are central, attachments are a part of the messages (not vice versa). The profile can be extended with communication tools such as Twitter or Skype.
ICT extended with the term Education seems to me not suitable for Blended learning, in case students are for example just visiting their campus for practical reasons or some introduction for specific subjects or for their exams. In that case communication should be the first concern when implementing Blended Learning. By consequence learning platforms with a central communication module should be further investigated.

Technisch gebruik : camera & micro(voor foto’s met ingesproken annotaties), GPS(navigeren), compass( wandelrichting)

Toegepast op studenten kunstwetenschappen, die op observatietocht werden gestuurd tijdens een studiereis naar Florence. Acht van hen gingen alleen met de smatphone-techniek, de rest ging met leraar

Concrete toepassingen :

• Studenten krijgen een assignment op basis van de GPSlocatie (audio gebaseerd op GPS via headset).
• Student neemt fotos en neemt notas’s. Terug thuis wordt dit gebruikt voor hun essay.

Sommige probemen: gps signaal niet altijd accuraat. Die notas delen met hun peers zagen ze niet zitten, wel het essay dat ze thuis zouden maken op basis van die nota’s, batterijduur van de smartphone.

Resultaat : de kwaliteit van de essays was aanzienlijk beter met gebruik van mobiel leren+ geen schoolreizen meer op een vast moment. Studenten kunnen +/- eigen datum kiezen

Criteria voor keuze van een uitwisselingsplatform?

• Zintuigelijke communicatie (stem en beeld) moeten mogelijk zijn
• Simple and easy to use
• Vlotte “ realtime connection”
• Discussion forum met bijlagen
• Mobiel

De geteste produkten :

• Flowdock : simple easy, fluent
• Qaiku : disorganized, fuzzy, geen overzicht
• Yammer : very easy to use. Yammer on mobile!

De tool die er het beste uitkwam was  Yammer.

Verschillende studenten die afstandsleren kiezen missen contacten met docenten of peers. Ik herinner me een aantal gesprekken hierover met onze studenten.Profielgegevens uitwisselen,informele en formele contacten zijn zeer welkom voor hen om zich niet te veel geisoleerd te voelen. Misschien moeten we eens onderzoeken hoe zo een community bijdraagt tot een reductie van de uitval als die er is…) gedurende het jaar.  Voor deze doelgroep zie ik in Yammer is een waardig alternatief of aanvulling  voor Blackboard .

Huw Morris. Niet de meest sensationele spreker.  English Dry. Maar hij zorgt wel voor één van die momenten dat je denkt : dit maakt de trip naar Berlijn waardevol.

In verschillende universiteiten  heeft hij als dean de evolutie gevolgd van LM systemen in de jaren ’90 tot nu.  De University of Salford werkt nu met  Blackboard 9.1. Daarnaast ziet men geen enkel probleem om proffen hun eigen weg te laten zoeken via Web 2.0.  Ok, no big deal. De Fantasy Places( dat is pas Big Deal): campuslocaties waar studenten en docenten creatief kunnen  omgaan met beeld en geluid, zowel voor lectures, opnames, montages, animaties. Impressionante studio’s!  MediaCityUK is een campus waar naaste de University of Salford ook de BBC een locatie heeft voor de ontwikkeling van programma’s gebaseerd op de laatste videotechnieken (zoals augmented reality).

“Leren/opleiden is van content evolueren naar context”. Creëer  een omgeving waarbij studenten met hun technologie zoveel mogelijk vragen kunnen stellen (wat belangrijker is dan antwoorden geven,die vind je wel op het internet).

Een voorbeeld van context is bvb. “Harry Potter and the new culture of learning”. Er zijn op http://fanfiction.net nu al 1500 nieuwe novels gepubliceerd… door de fans zelf.  Het gaat daar niet alleen over het verhaal maar over leren, over maatschappelijke, zakelijke, technische onderwerpen.

Context heeft ook te maken met de huidige manier van denken. Studenten vertrouwen niemand meer (“even not the New York Times).., maar ze verdiepen zich wel in een context waar een grote hoeveelheid bronnen zorgen voor informatie.

Wat ik begrepen heb is dat ze voor een opleiding ICT kozen voor de methode Blended Learning. Studenten krijgen om de 2 weken ca 2u les als start van een module. Het lesmateriaal en de opdrachten bevinden zich op een Moodle-platform. Via Adobe Connect zijn er opvolgsessies. Het modulair programma zit goed in elkaar : introsessie/studiemateriaal verwerken/opvolgen via Adobe Connect/evaluatie.  De cursussen maken geen deel uit van een Bachelor- of Master-degree. Contrast: Tarenskeen: “We hebben nu 50 studenten”. Waarop een Engelse gentleman repliceerde: “Nice,… we have  70.000 students who are familiar with this way of learning”

Andrea Pozzi start met een opsomming van sofdtware voor muziekproduktie.

De spreker was duidelijk een fan van Cubase. Gelukkig was ik, toen een toehoorder reageerde dat na 2 weken studie en 3 duur betaalde lesmodules hij er nog altijd niet wijzer is van geworden. Niet bepaald geschikt voor muziekonderwijs. Een typisch voorbeeld van software waarbij de interface een kopie is van een echt mengpaneel, met alle draai- en schuifknoppen en lampjes en drukknoppen… Is herkenbaar maar gewoon niet werkbaar. Toch niet voor de beginnende muzikant.

Jörn Handschke is de CEO van Magix AG, ook weer een Duits produkt. Eenvoudig in gebruik met een onderliggende complexiteit. Op een kwartiertje heb je een clip en als je werkelijk wil gaan musiceren dan kan op elk fragment ingezoomd worden met toepasselijke views voor type instrument, type muziek, etc…. Hier een fragment (niet bepaald “my peace of cake”, maar bij wijze van voorbeeld toch de moeite). Ontwikkeltijd : 10 minuten.

Sorry, collega’s, de geplande sessie “New learning, new content” was al een kwartier voor tijd volzet, dus moest ik uitwijken naar een voor onze cel  minder relevante sessie in de buurt. Toch.. als we zelf auteur willen zijn van onze muziekfragmenten?
